The New Year! After the Christmas hype has died down, presents have been opened and bellies have been stuffed, people start looking towards the New Year. The shiny, glistening New Year! Untouched, unstained by our mistakes! A new chance, a new you! Filled with hope and pure innocence! Then, New Year’s Eve rolls around, either in the city surrounded by the intoxicated, at a family gathering, or at home by ourselves painfully listening to the countdown to the New Year.
10, 9, 8 … Oh my gosh! It is happening! It is nearly 2016!
7,6 … Wait where is he? Where is he?
5,4,3 … What! I have not thought of a New Year’s resolution yet!
2 … Uuuuuummm
1! OK, I will eat more healthily!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Regardless of whether your New Year’s goal has been blurted out, or been written down clearly, you are full of confidence as this will be your year! You can see it, and can almost touch it. Even when at 2 am on the first day of the New Year you are scoffing a McDonald’s hamburger down your throat, you console yourself not to worry. ‘I will start tomorrow,’ and then, before you know it, ‘I will start tomorrow’ is welcoming the New Year, and the cycle starts all over again.
This year has not been the greatest for me. Mainly, due to me and also because of some life stuff thrown into the mix. I was a hermit, overweight, unhappy and not doing much with my life, except working two days a week as an office manager. It is not the best feeling in the world, but I am going to accept it and make 2016 my year. This time I am not just going to say it, but actually do it. So this is where the blog comes into play. This blog is sort of going to act as my conscience and steer me in the right direction when I fall off the railings, and show me right from wrong. My goal is to fill this blog with easy delicious, healthy recipes that I can easily follow, and to tell my story the – good, the bad and the ugly. So you can look at my mistakes, laugh if you want to, and decide not to not follow them, and look at my triumphs, be proud with me and follow them.
This year has not been a total waste of 365 days. I learned skills from my office job, and also a very important lesson.
Previously, I thought that I was living in the only run-down, abandoned house in a block of freshly-painted houses with well-manicured lawns. Once I visited a few, and stepped inside, I realised that many bore an identical resemblance to my own house. So, the 2015 lesson I learnt was that everyone puts up facades of their perfect houses, perfect families, and perfect lives, but, as Atticus Finch once said, ‘You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view … until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.’
So, 2016 is home renovation year. I know my house is never going to be perfect- maybe a leaky tap or a broken gutter, but I can always fix them. This year I am going to fix my house and, maybe one day, I will be able to redecorate the insides of the other houses on the street.
So if you would like to come along, you are most welcome to. Welcome to my tiny space on the World Wide Web.
